Daisy Louisa de Melker (nee Hancorn-Smith, married Cowle, married Sproat) is considered as South Africa's first female serial killer.

She was accused of poisoning her first two husbands with strychnine, and her son with arsenic. The Crown had to withdraw the first two accusations because there was insufficient evidence to prove that she, as a teenage girl in Rhodesia, could have purchased poison with which to murder people whom she had not even met, some twenty years later. All three deceased were sickly men, who suffered from a variety of complaints and were treated by numerous doctors. In 1930 both cosmetics and medicines contained a variety of poisons - including arsenic and strychnine.

Was Daisy truly guilty of the murders she was charged with, or was there more room for reasonable doubt than was afforded her in 1932? If so, then the 1932 trial of Daisy de Melker must count as one of the worst miscarriages of justice in South Africa's history.
