Kill them all!
In 1209 Pope Innocent III launched a holy war - the Albigensian Crusade - against the Cathars in the Languedoc region of southern France. In this book historical figures such as Caesarius of Heisterbach, Guy de Vaux-Cernay, Dominic de Guzman, and Papal Legate Arnauld Aimery all stand accused of heinous crimes against humanity; because the Albigensian Crusade can be seen as nothing less than religiously bigoted, systematic genocide. Like the other Meridional lords of Occitania, Raymond VI of Saint Giles, Count of Toulouse faces the dilemma of all leaders - a choice between the lesser of two evils.
Count Raymond's nephew, Roger-Raymond Trencavel, the young Viscount of Bezier is the leader of the Faydit lords - those whose lives and lands are declared forfeit, open to prey.
The last stand of Monteségur is well documented, but Chasseneuil, Servian, Villemur and other castles, villages and towns all faced the same horrors. This Crusade gave rise to the Inquisition which caused many of the Faydit and Meridional lords to seek refuge in the ranks of the Knights Templar. The book discusses the Holy Grail Sages and the schism between the Church of Peter and that of John - which led to eventual demise of the Order, the gruesome tortures they were subjected to and subsequent slander of these brave knights.
